Frequently Asked Questions

If you are figuring out how to choose a financial advisor in New York, DC, Virginia, Maryland, or Pennsylvania, this page is for you. Every question below is one we hear from real people before they decide whether to work with us. We answer all of them the same way we would in person, directly and without the jargon.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes, always. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, Christina Massalay is legally and ethically required to act as a fiduciary at all times when advising clients. That means every recommendation we make must be in your best interest. Not sometimes. Not when it is convenient. Every single time.

What is the difference between fee-only and fee-based?

Fee-only means we are paid exclusively by you. No commissions, no referral fees, no payments from product providers. Fee-based sounds similar but it is not the same. A fee-based advisor charges clients a fee and can also earn commissions on products they sell. That creates a conflict of interest. We do not have that conflict because we do not accept outside compensation of any kind.

How do you get compensated?

Transparency is the foundation of everything we do. As a fee-only practice, we are compensated exclusively by our clients for the advice, guidance, and investment management we provide. There are no hidden fees and no commissions. By never accepting commissions or third-party payments, we can stand firmly by your side, free from conflicts of interest and fully committed to your financial well-being.

What credentials does Christina Massalay hold?

Christina holds two of the most respected credentials in financial services. She is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®, which requires rigorous education, a national exam, ongoing continuing education, and a fiduciary commitment to clients. She is also a licensed CPA in New York, which means she brings real tax expertise into every financial plan, not just investment advice.

Where is my money actually held?

Your assets are held at either Charles Schwab or Fidelity, not with MFM directly. We manage your investments but we never take physical custody of your money. You have direct account access through your custodian and receive statements from them independently of anything we send you. That separation is intentional and it is how your money stays protected.

Do you work with clients outside of New York?

Yes. We serve clients across New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. We meet in person or virtually depending on what works best for you. As a CFP®, Christina is able to work with clients across all 50 states.

Which states do you serve?

Our primary service area covers New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC. If you are located outside of those states, reach out and we will let you know if we can help.

What does the first meeting look like?

The first meeting is a conversation, not a sales pitch. We want to understand your situation, your goals, and what has and has not worked for you in the past. You will leave with a clear sense of how we work and whether MFM is the right fit. There is no pressure and no obligation.

Is the first consultation free?

Yes. The initial consultation is complimentary. It is our opportunity to get to know each other and for you to ask every question you have before making any decision.

How often will we meet?

Every client relationship is different. We start with a formal annual review and regular check-ins throughout the year, then adjust the frequency and format entirely around your preferences. Some clients want quarterly calls. Others prefer to hear from us only when something important changes. We follow your lead.

What is the minimum investment to work with MFM?

Please contact us directly to discuss minimums. Every situation is different and we are happy to have that conversation.

What is Main Street Financial Solutions and what role do they play?

Main Street Financial Solutions, or MSFS, provides compliance and operations oversight as well as industry expertise and capital. Their network monitors our activity to make sure we are always acting in your best interest and appropriately disclosing all material facts. They are an independent layer of oversight that holds us accountable, which is an additional protection for you as a client.

What happens to my money if MFM closes?

Your money stays exactly where it is. Because your assets are held at Charles Schwab or Fidelity, not at MFM, they are completely unaffected by anything that happens to our firm. You would simply need to either manage the accounts yourself or transfer them to a new advisor. The custodian holds your assets independently of us.

Do you integrate faith into your financial planning?

Faith is at the core of everything we do at MFM. For clients who want their financial plan to reflect their values and beliefs, we welcome that conversation. We also offer a prayer request form on our contact page for anyone who would like us to pray for them. We are honored to serve the whole person, not just the portfolio.

What is a CFP and why does it matter?

CFP stands for CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER®. It is widely considered the gold standard credential in financial planning. Earning it requires completing a comprehensive education program, passing a rigorous national exam, accumulating thousands of hours of professional experience, and committing to ongoing continuing education. Most importantly, CFP professionals are required to act as fiduciaries. Not every financial advisor holds this credential and the difference matters.

What is a CPA and how is that different from a financial advisor?

A CPA, or Certified Public Accountant, is a licensed accounting professional with expertise in taxes, financial statements, and compliance. A financial advisor focuses on investment strategy, financial planning, and wealth management. Christina holds both credentials, which means tax expertise and financial planning expertise sit under one roof. Most advisors refer you out for tax questions. We handle them as part of the plan.

Can you help with tax planning if I live in a different state?

Yes. We work with clients across New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC and we understand the tax considerations in each state. Tax planning is a core part of every financial plan we build, regardless of where you live.

Do you manage my investments directly?

Yes. As a discretionary investment manager, we build and manage your portfolio on your behalf. We make investment decisions within the parameters we agree on together and we keep you informed throughout. You always know what is in your portfolio and why.

What types of accounts do you manage?

We manage a wide range of account types including individual and joint brokerage accounts, traditional and Roth IRAs, rollover IRAs, SEP IRAs, Solo 401(k)s, trusts, and more. If you have an account type you are not sure about, ask us and we will let you know.

How is MFM different from a robo-advisor?

A robo-advisor is an algorithm. It builds a generic portfolio based on a few questions and runs it automatically with no human involvement. MFM is a relationship. We get to know you, your family, your goals, and your full financial picture. Then we build a plan around all of it. No algorithm knows that your business is your largest asset, that you are planning to sell in seven years, or that you want to leave something meaningful for your children. We do.
