Confronting inflation: Expert's advice on managing finances, evaluating money relationship
by Michelle Marsh | Thu, April 4, 2024 at 2:51 PM
WASHINGTON (7News) — While stubborn inflation is expected to stick around in 2024, 7News spoke to Certified Financial Planner Christina Massalay who shared tips on how to help folks prepare for their future and meet financial goals.
Massalay said that given the current state of the economy with high costs for food, rent and home costs, it’s important to evaluate your relationship with money.
“Money is something that’s very emotional and when you are coming to a financial advisor, you have to get very vulnerable with your finances,” Massalay said.
Massalay is the CEO and Founder of Mass Financial Management. She has more than 15 years of experience in financial services spanning investment banking areas (leverage finance, equity capital & debt capital markets), financial analysis, and public accounting at Credit Suisse, Fortress Investment Group, and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
She begins her work with new clients by asking them to fill out a money personality survey. She said that helps reveal how they view money.
“Do you have a scarcity mindset about money? Do you have a money avoidance money script? Meaning, you avoid opening your bills because it’s so overwhelming,” Massalay said.
Massalay said she has observed some differences between men and women when it comes to conversations about money.
“More women are transparent than men. Women are more open to asking questions that they don’t know the answer to and many times they are more analytical even though they may not think they are,” Massalay revealed.
She said men and women sometimes have different approaches to financial wellness based on personal income or family history.
Massalay said individuals and couples should not avoid tough conversations about money, start those conversations today.
“You can’t look back and say 'I should have done this or that' because a lot of women, in particular, tend to beat ourselves up over that, so I tell my clients you cannot unscramble eggs,” Massalay said.
Mass Financial Management is based in New York City. The company offers live online sessions to help people on their road to financial wellness. Massalay also provides a wealth-building session exclusively for women called “Own your way to Millionaire Status”
